Abstract   Stomach cancer is the most frequent malignancy in Korea. Epidemiological studies revealed that smoking, high salt diet, a certain job-related factor and a genetic factor were related to the occurrence of the cancer. Relation of the prognosis of patients with the cancer to expression of human histocompatibility antigen(HLA) on the cancer cell has heen studies. We studied the expression of the HLA in 39 young patients(<40 years) with stomach cancer and 30 controls. HLA class I and class II antigens were determined by Park and Terasaki method, and PCR method, respectively. The cancer group had a higher frequency of HLA-B7, -46 and -B60 antigens but a lower fre- quency of HLA-B61, -DR1 and -DRl 1 antigens than the controL There was no difference in the freqnency of HLA-A and -Cantigens between 2 groups. In class II HLA antigens, the 14 patients were checked for the distribution of HLA-DQ of class II HLA antigens; HLA-DQ6 was expressed in 6, DQ5 in 7, DQ3 in 10, DQ4 in 1 and DQ2 in 2.
